The railroad tunnel is 4.75 miles long passing through the Hoosac Mountain Range (Hoosac, Algonquian meaning “place of stones”). The work began in 1848 and was completed in 1875. At the time, it was the second longest tunnel in the world. There’s lots of history about the Hoosac Tunnel. Check it out in person or on the web before it’s Lost in New England.
